There are no taxi stands, and you wont find them waiting at the roadside either.
You can find them listed in the yellow pages. In most cases, you will just have to call up and make an appointment for a taxi. Taxis are listed in the yellow pages under the name "Taxi" or "Taxicabs". But there is a separate taxi line at the Airport or at the Railway Stations.
Americans drive on the right side of the road and the driver sits on the left side of the car.
When you call, tell the "dispatch" operator where you are and where you want to go. The dispatch operator will tell you how long it will take for the taxi to arrive at your starting point. He or she will ask for the telephone number. You should ask for the estimated cost of the ride.
When you enter the taxi, the meter will read flat rate. This is the minimum charge.
Check US travel link www.austradetech.com/travel/usalinks.htm for pricing on fares and car hire.
Call a taxi for a particular time, and try your best not to keep him waiting for a long time, as normally meter starts at the time you have asked for it.
Keep some change ($1, $5, $10) as some times taxi guys dont have change and you might end up paying a little extra.
CALLING A TAXI:
Call up the taxi number from your yellow pages, and give the operator complete details, about where you are and where you want to go. Ask for the estimated fare & how long it might take for destination. Give your telephone number, so that the taxi driver can call you if he has any problem in locating you.
