Driver's license is one of the most important documents required in the US. Apart from driving needs it is required at almost all the places where you need to show your ID.

In the US most money payments are carried out by Cheque or Credit Card. Cheques are as good as cash and can be deposited at any ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) center. These cheques are accepted only with a valid photo-id and at most places. Driver's license is the only valid photo-id. A photo-id could also be a simple identity card issued by the DMV (Dept. of motor vehicles), but this does not substitute for a driver's license.

Most states allow you to drive with an IDP (International Driving Permit) for a year but it differs state to state (3 or 6 months). Please check on landing. Later you require a valid driving license.

TO obtain a driving license, you have to appear for a written test and a driving test (road test) conducted by DMV. It is followed by an Eye test.

You will then be issued a temporary driving license, which is valid for two months.

DMV also issues an ID card, which is issued by the State Government.

You can use this card as a Photo-Id till you get your drivers license. During the period of temporary license, you can apply for the driving test.

You can go for private lessons from a driving school or to a private teacher. Private teachers are little cheaper as compared to a driving school. Once you are ready for the test, you need to take an appointment with the DMV for the driving test.



On the day of appointment you need to go there with your learning license. The car

in which you will give your driving test should have proper Insurance papers. Also
check all the controls, including signal lights and brake lights. If any of these are not
in shape, you will not be allowed to appear for the test. This test will be of 100 marks.

After your test, driving inspector will immediately tell you your result. Generally they
explain to you your mistakes so that you can work on them and rectify. If you have
passed you will get your license immediately in most places. If you fail there is no
minimum waiting period required for taking the test again.
