Get a bus or train schedule from the web site of the local transport organizations for your convenience. For example, in Central Silicon Valley area VTA web site gives such information. Tickets can be purchased through the website.
Normally you purchase your daily tickets from the train or bus to be scheduled or at authorized counter.
In local buses, generally, the driver does not give back any change. Always carry the exact fare. Or you can get a monthly pass. Trains (Amtrak) rarely offer any significant cost savings.
Confirm about your destination before boarding on the bus; you may ask the driver about the stop you want to go.
Cities in the western US tend to be more dispersed, and travel via hired cars is often more economical.
For inter-city transport, buses are available in almost all the cities. In few places
there are trains. Their schedule, rates etc., can be found on the web. Grey Hound (www.greyhound.com) is one such service.
